Project Nestbox: An Environmental Awareness
Project
Consider for a moment the wide variety of wildlife species in the
Long Green Valley. Most live quietly in our woodlands and fields
without human assistance, while others benefit from feeders, wildlife
gardens and nest boxes provided by ecology minded property owners.
In an effort to promote environmental awareness and enhance wildlife
habitat within the Valley, the LGLT has developed a program to provide
nest boxes for cavity dwelling birds found in our forests and fields.
The project's goal is to provide nest boxes for Eastern bluebirds
and American kestrels. Both the species require hollow cavities
to construct their nests. Unfortunately, suitable nesting cavities
continue to decrease as hedgerows and forests are cleared. Other
species such as house wrens, chickadees, tufted titmice, great-
crested flycatchers, tree swallows and flying squirrels make use
of these boxes.
While we encourage putting nest boxes on your property, our project
focuses on creating bluebird trails and kestrel nesting boxes on
hundreds of acres of crop and pasture lands found in the Long Green
Valley. The farmers are not able to construct, maintain and monitor
these nest boxes on their own. So, Project Nest Box has been established
to work with landowners to help provide new nesting opportunities
for our flying friends. For $35.00, you can sponsor a bluebird or
kestrel nesting box that will be installed by the Wildlife Committee
of the LGLT. For your gift, you will receive notification of the
box number and location. You will know that not only will these
birds enhance our valley, but they will also consume countless numbers
of mosquitoes, insect pests and rodents.
Mark the Nesting Box on the contribution
page and return it to the LGLT along with a check for $35.00
made payable to LGLT. This also makes a great educational gift for
kids and adults.
